Description

The Bonn Climate Camp, in collaboration with Klimadelegation e.V. and Fridays for Future Bonn, invites climate activists from the Global South to apply for fully funded support to attend the UNFCCC SB60 (3–13 June 2024) and the Bonn Climate Camp in Bonn, Germany. This initiative aims to amplify marginalized voices in climate justice. The application deadline has passed (14 May 2024), but this recap highlights the opportunity for future reference, as similar funding may be available for SB62 in June 2025.

Programme Overview

The Bonn Climate Camp is a vibrant hub during SB60, offering workshops, talks, and activities on climate justice, including environmental racism and Indigenous rights. Selected activists participate as Observers at SB60 sessions and engage in camp activities, with flexible attendance options. The programme supports a small group of international activists with:

  • Full Funding: Covers flight tickets, local travel, and daily expenses (e.g., meals, accommodation).

  • Networking: Connect with global activists, policymakers, and climate experts.

  • Skill-Building: Gain insights into climate policy, advocacy, and intersectional justice.

  • Advocacy Platform: Amplify Global South perspectives in UNFCCC negotiations.

Eligibility

  • Region: Activists from Africa, Asia, and other Global South countries.

  • Commitment: Passion for climate justice and community-based climate action.

  • Age: Typically 18–35 (based on youth-focused climate programs).

  • SB60 Access: Applicants needed Observer status or camp facilitation for SB60 sessions.

Why It Mattered

SB60 was a critical preparatory meeting for COP29, focusing on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance, adaptation, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due by 10 February 2025. Global South activists played a vital role in advocating for equitable finance and accountability, addressing barriers like insufficient funding and historical emissions responsibilities of developed nations. The camp fostered solidarity and empowered activists to influence global climate policy.

Application Process (Closed for SB60)

  • Deadline: 14 May 2024, 23:59 GMT.

  • Process: Submit an online form via the Bonn Climate Camp portal, detailing climate justice experience and motivation.

  • Selection: Based on commitment to intersectional climate issues and regional representation.

Looking Ahead: SB62 (16–26 June 2025)

While SB60 funding applications are closed, the Bonn Climate Camp Bridge Fund may offer similar support for SB62 (16–26 June 2025, Bonn). Interested activists should monitor the official website for updates on funding for Global South participants, expected to open in early 2025.
